Ghana has been an affiliate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) since 2002, though only competes in small tournaments within Africa.

The legendary Indian batsman Rohit Sharma coached Ghana in the 2015 African Twenty20 tournament, so it’s clear that the sport is moving in the right direction. Hopefully Ghana will be competing with the likes of the big guns one day soon!

Cricket has been played in the region for a very long period of time – since the early 1900s, though Ghana did not exist in its current form – the country was known as the Gold Coast in those days. In the latter half of the 20th century, the country competed as part of a larger “West Africa” side.

With the introduction of the Twenty20 format, the popularity of Cricket has skyrocketed in Ghana. This is because the Twenty20 format is deemed as being a lot more appealing to new fans of the sport. Many of Cricket’s critics complain that the sport is boring due to the length of time required to complete a game, but Twenty20 is a far shorter version of the game that is extremely popular.
